CP Innovations

Predictive Analytics

Wayside detectors collect valuable data that is analyzed to anticipate issues with locomotives, railcars and track infrastructure so that we can take preventive measures before an incident occurs. This predictive analytics is a key part of our technology-driven train inspection program.

Our patented algorithm provides a safety and competitive advantage, with 86% of all equipment setoffs confirmed defective versus industry average of 65% and our predictive analytics have reduced online failures by 91% — significantly reducing the risk of derailments, rail fatigue and service interruptions.

Technology-driven train inspection

Locomotive Modernization

The business case for locomotive modernization is compelling:

  • Leverages existing assets, delivering the same benefits of a new locomotive at half the cost
  • Combines the best of current and new technologies
  • Enables volume growth, drives operating efficiencies and cost savings, while improving service reliability

The future of Grain Transportation

From dedicated trains to dedicated people, CP is focused on moving grain to market and has been for more than 130 years. CP is driving the next level of efficiency in the North American grain supply chain to help our partners win in the market.

CP is investing in growing grain

CP’S $500 million investment in new high-capacity grain hoppers has substantial benefits for CP, customers, farmers, and supply chain partners:

  • CAPACITY — new hoppers are shorter and carry more grain, which means more grain per train
  • EFFICIENCY — new design allows for faster loading and unloading
  • RELIABILITY — new hoppers are more reliable and require less maintenance

Elevators built for CP 8,500-foot trains

  • New loop track elevators capable of loading 8,500-foot trains in 16 hours
  • CP’s power-on model keeps entire train intact for faster loading and departure
  • Efficiency gains for both grain shippers and CP
  • Existing elevators also expanding to load 8,500-foot trains
